When should my hospital bag be ready?

Ready early beats ready exactly on time. Here is the timing, and what a birth plan has to do with it.

The short answer

At least 3 weeks before your due date.

Have your hospital bag packed at least 3 weeks before your due date, so you are ready if your baby arrives early. Packing is also a natural moment to finish your birth plan: a simple note that tells your team what you would like during labor and just after, written to stay flexible.

What's going on

Babies do not read calendars.

Due dates are estimates, and some babies come sooner. The reviewed timing rule builds in that margin:

The bag carries your things. The birth plan carries your preferences, and it deserves the same early, unhurried attention:

A birth plan is simply a way to let your midwives, nurses, and doctors know what you'd like during labour and just after, such as who's with you, positions, pain-relief preferences, skin-to-skin, and how you'd like to feed.NHS - How to make a birth plan · pregnancy 28-40 weeks

It's personal to you, and it helps to talk it through with your provider as you write it. Keep it flexible; birth doesn't always go to plan, and it's okay for things to change on the day."

A printed copy of that plan is a good first thing to drop into the bag. Everything else can accumulate over a week or two; the point is that the bag exists and lives somewhere visible.

When to call

If something feels wrong.

This page is education, not diagnosis. If something feels wrong, call your pediatrician (or your OB for your own body). In an emergency in the US, call 911.

Tonight's small action

Start the bag with three things.

Tonight, set an open bag by the closet and drop in the first three items: a phone charger, a change of clothes, and your ID. A started bag gets finished. An imagined one stays imagined until the last minute.
