Your baby, month by month

One calm guide for every month of the first year. Each one covers what most babies are doing now, typical sleep and feeding, and the short list of signs that deserve a call to your doctor. Milestones are ranges, not deadlines, and every claim links to its primary source (AAP, CDC, WHO). How we write: Editorial Standards.

Newborn days

Weeks 1 to 4: your newbornWhat is normal for sleep and feeding in the very first weeks, and the warning signs that need a doctor at this age.

Months 1 to 6

Month 1First smiles are coming, crying peaks, and days and nights slowly sort themselves out. Month 2The first social smile, steadier head control, and the first big vaccines visit. Month 3Hands become fascinating, cooing gets chatty, and stretches of sleep grow longer. Month 4Laughing, reaching, and the famous 4 month sleep regression, explained without panic. Month 5Rolling and babbling take off, and solids are on the horizon. Month 6Starting solid foods, including peanut, plus sitting practice and half-birthday sleep.

Months 7 to 12

Month 7Sitting steadies, babbling turns into conversations, and solids find a rhythm. Month 8Crawling in all its styles, some babies skip it entirely, and the month to babyproof. Month 9The CDC 9 month checklist explained as ranges, pulling to stand, and separation anxiety. Month 10Cruising along the furniture, first words in the making, and safety for a baby on the move. Month 11Standing alone, maybe a first step, and what to do about all that climbing. Month 12First steps, first words, the switch to whole milk, and a look back at a very big year.
